Great question! Sadly, my answer will disappoint you. I wrote this story in one hour, after seeing Rune Bear’s submission call on Twitter and checking out a few of their stories. The inspiration struck almost instantaneously, but I have no idea why it was this particular story that manifested itself. The themes it explores were far from relevant to me at the time, though they are now, and looking through the story with fresh eyes, I was surprised anew. What did give me this idea, I wonder?
Disappoint? Hardly! I’m impressed you created this without the topic being particularly relevant at the time and to have done so that quickly—amazing. 👏🏼
The idea that such a delivery is possible is quite unsettling, yet also not unbelievable for the distant dystopic future. I got vibes of a fragment of a Black Mirror episode here. Excellent work!
Ahh, Black Mirror! Reading this story again, I was quite surprised, as I told Erika above, at it feels as though it was Present Me who wrote it. Past Me didn't really think about the philosophy of being a mom at all, so I have no idea where this story sprang from. Thank you for reading and commenting, Nathan, my friend!
A different sort of Finnegan wakes.
Right! Clever.
Riveting! If you don’t mind sharing—what gave you the idea for this piece? 👀

A really great story !
Thank you!
Whoa!
😯
Great story!
🥂 thanks, Martine! So happy I got to give it a new home.
I love pieces like this that make me think differently!
Thanks a lot for checking it out!
So engrossing! I feel like I know the entire history between the narrator and Bertha in just a few sentences.
Thanks a lot, Will! That’s what I tried to do. I’m glad I managed.
Amazing and surprising! I`m still sticked to my sit 😅 You have a very powerful imagination. Congratulations!!
Ooo that’s high praise! Thanks so much, Sara! I really enjoyed writing this one, and I appreciate you a lot.
Mail order brides and babies and puppies, and anything else! Brave New World. Great story. Pity about the magazine.
Thanks, Alexander! Glad you liked it.
Beautiful story💞💜
It took me a while, but I've learned that parenthood comes in many forms. Bertha can indeed suck it!
<3 Thanks for reading, Kimber!
If only life were a short short story!
Packs a lot in such a short package, Andrei!
